Galamsey Menace: GRASAG to Join Catholic Bishops in Protest Against Galamsey on October 11

The Graduate Students' Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has announced its intention to join forces with the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference in a nationwide protest against illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, and what they describe as worsening governance in the country. The protest, scheduled for October 11, 2024, is expected to draw significant attention to the environmental degradation caused by galamsey and the perceived lapses in leadership in addressing the issue. The Catholic Bishops have been vocal in their criticisms of illegal mining, which has devastated large portions of Ghana’s forests, farmlands, and water bodies. They argue that despite various government initiatives to combat galamsey, the issue persists, posing a serious threat to the environment and livelihoods across the country.   Former Black Stars midfielder, Sulley Muntari has announced his retirement from football after almost two decades of being a professional footballer. Sulley Muntari confirmed on Monday, 28th November 2022 that the time has come for his career to come to an end at the age of 38 after playing for the Ghana Premier League side Hearts of Oak last as requested by his son. “I just did a few months with the local side [Hearts of Oak]. My son wanted me to play. I didn’t play for almost three years, then my son decided to ask me to go and play. I did that, but now I’m done,” he told Sky Sports. Sulley Muntari joined Hearts of Oak at the beginning of the year making a significant contribution to the club as they made their way to the FA Cup title and the President’s Cup, but he recently parted ways with them after failing to reach an agreement concerning an extension of his contract.
