Galamsey Menace: GRASAG to Join Catholic Bishops in Protest Against Galamsey on October 11

The Graduate Students' Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has announced its intention to join forces with the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference in a nationwide protest against illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, and what they describe as worsening governance in the country. The protest, scheduled for October 11, 2024, is expected to draw significant attention to the environmental degradation caused by galamsey and the perceived lapses in leadership in addressing the issue. The Catholic Bishops have been vocal in their criticisms of illegal mining, which has devastated large portions of Ghana’s forests, farmlands, and water bodies. They argue that despite various government initiatives to combat galamsey, the issue persists, posing a serious threat to the environment and livelihoods across the country. Nigerian Election: Singer Turned Politician, Banky W Loses Seat To Labour Party

Banky W  Nigerian singer, Olubankole Wellington, also known as Banky W, the musician-turned-politician, has unfortunately lost to his opponent Thaddeus Attah of the Labour Party(LP). He did not get the results he hoped for, as he lost the seat to the candidate of the Labour Party. On Sunday, 26 February, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Mr Thaddeus Attah as the winner of the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives. Thaddeus Attah won with 24,075 votes, defeating his opponents, Mr Olubankole Wellington (Banky W) representing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who had 18,666 votes, and Mr Babjide Obanikoro of the APC, who had 16,901 votes. The INEC Returning Officer, Professor Funmilayo Odukoya, declared Attah the winner at the Collation Centre, Lagos State Model Nursery and Primary School, Marwa, Lekki 1. Some Women Organizers of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have bought the presidential nomination forms for Dr Kwabena Dufdour to contest the NDC flagbearership race. The Women Organizers, led by Gloria Huze, the Ashanti Regional Women’s Organizer stormed the NDC’s Headquarters in Adabraka to pick the forms, handing a cheque of GH₵‎30, 000 cedis to Lawyer is Kakra Essamoah, the Director of Election of the NDC, who later handed it over to the Accountant of the party. According to Madam Gloria Huze, the Women Organizers are from the branch, constituency and regional levels of the party across the 16 regions of Ghana. Madam Gloria Huze explained that the women organizer decided to contribute to buy the forms for Dr Duffour because they believe in his vision for Ghana, She added that the current state of the Ghanaian economy required someone with a proven track record in economic management to lead the country to the path of recovery, growth and prosperity. This came after Alan tendered his resignation to the President of the Republic, Nana Akufo-Addo, from the Ministry Of Trade and Industry. The President has thus accepted the resignation and assigned under-pressure Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, to be caretaker in the absence of Alan. Alan Kyerematen, popularly known as Alan Cash, took to his social media handle to thank President Nana Addo ‘for the opportunity to serve and for graciously accepting my resignation as Cabinet Minister responsible for Trade and Industry, effective 16th January, 2023’. The Flagbearer aspirant added that ‘ I sincerely appreciate the support from my family, colleagues, my party the NPP, the international community, and the general public during my tenure as a Minister, I will be addressing the Ghanaian people in the next few days’.
