The Graduate Students' Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has announced its intention to join forces with the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference in a nationwide protest against illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, and what they describe as worsening governance in the country. The protest, scheduled for October 11, 2024, is expected to draw significant attention to the environmental degradation caused by galamsey and the perceived lapses in leadership in addressing the issue. The Catholic Bishops have been vocal in their criticisms of illegal mining, which has devastated large portions of Ghana’s forests, farmlands, and water bodies. They argue that despite various government initiatives to combat galamsey, the issue persists, posing a serious threat to the environment and livelihoods across the country. Dr. Robert Kuganab-Lem, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Binduri Constituency in the Upper East Region, has claimed that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is involved in the Bawku conflict. The MP claims that the Vice President has stood by unconcernedly as the Overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom, Nayiri, Naa Bohugu Mahama Abdulai II, has enskinned Bawku Naba, whom he refers to as an   “imposter”   when he already in office. Businessman and Co-Founder of now defunct UT Bank Prince Kofi Amoabeng has endorsed the opposition National Democratic Congress as the only viable option to take over government after 2024 elections. The rerir military officer said though he voted for the governing New Patriotic Party in previous elections, he has resolved to vote for the NDC in the next election. According to him, though he has a strong affiliation with the NPP with his sister being an NPP Member of Parliament, the country needs a change. “I won’t vote for the NPP, I will tell you. I said I won’t vote for NPP. I will vote for NDC. We need a change and the only viable option is NDC”, he responded to a texter during an interview on Ghana Television.
