Galamsey Menace: GRASAG to Join Catholic Bishops in Protest Against Galamsey on October 11

Image
The Graduate Students' Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has announced its intention to join forces with the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference in a nationwide protest against illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, and what they describe as worsening governance in the country. The protest, scheduled for October 11, 2024, is expected to draw significant attention to the environmental degradation caused by galamsey and the perceived lapses in leadership in addressing the issue. The Catholic Bishops have been vocal in their criticisms of illegal mining, which has devastated large portions of Ghana’s forests, farmlands, and water bodies. They argue that despite various government initiatives to combat galamsey, the issue persists, posing a serious threat to the environment and livelihoods across the country. GRASAG, representing the voices of Ghana’s graduate students, has expressed concerns about the future of the nation, particularly in the areas of environmental cons

The Influence Of John Mahama's Number 8 Position On The Coming Election

Image
In the political landscape of Ghana, the upcoming elections are influenced by two important factors: the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) "Breaking the 8" agenda and John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing the 8th position on the ballot paper. 1. The NPP's "Breaking the 8" Agenda: The NPP has been in power for two consecutive terms with President Nana Akufo-Addo (2016-2024). Their "Breaking the 8" agenda aims to win a third consecutive term, which has never been achieved in Ghana's Fourth Republic. Since 1992, power has alternated between the NDC and the NPP every eight years. By breaking this cycle, the NPP hopes to achieve a significant milestone and defy historical trends. However, the NPP faces challenges such as voter fatigue, economic concerns (inflation, unemployment), and issues related to governance and corruption. Despite these challenges, if the NPP can effectively communicate their vision for continuity and

Election: (CSD-Ghana) Backs The NDC’s “Enough is Enough” Protest In Demand For A Credible Voters’Register

Image
The CSD-Ghana believes strongly that the foundation of any free and fair election is a credible register and as such, any effort towards having a credible Voters’ Register must be supported by all democracy lovers. The Electoral Commission has admitted to many errors in the Electoral Roll, as pointed out by the NDC, but has failed to allow for an independent forensic audit into the same. The EC, for example, has admitted that there were illegal vote transfers in Sagnerigu, Pusiga and Tamale South by an Electoral Commission Official in Tamale South. According to the EC, these illegal transfers went through because there was no “liveness check” mechanism in place to prevent such situations.  The NDC says the situation is widespread so there must be an audit. This is a fair and reasonable call to make, but the EC has remained intransigent. CSD-Ghana stands ready to fully participate in this protest and asks other democracy lovers to join us to mount enough pressure on the Electoral Commis

I want to see Mahama’s 24-hour economy – Ras Kuuku

Image
Ghanaian reggae and dancehall musician Ras Kuuku shared his thoughts on the much-discussed 24-hour economy during a studio discussion on Onua TV.  With the 2024 elections drawing closer, the topic has gained traction as John Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), campaigns on the promise of implementing a 24-hour economy. Ras Kuuku expressed his curiosity and interest in the concept, stating, "For digitalisation, we have already been experiencing it. Ghana is gradually being digitized. But we haven’t seen the 24-hour economy before." His remarks highlight the gradual shift towards a more digital society but also underline the novelty and potential impact of a 24-hour economy in Ghana. He further added, "It is something I want to see, so I would like for him [Mahama] to come and implement it so I can witness it." Ras Kuuku's statement reflects a desire to see the practical application of this economic model in the country,

A leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has averred that the intermittent power supply a.k.a. dumsor, being experienced by residents of the Ashanti Region became worse after the renaming and commissioning of the Ameri Power Plant. As a resident of the region herself, Madam Mould-Iddrisu explained how they have suffered the past few months with dumsor, maintaining that the situation was better even when the plant was idle. “And they believe that they have suffered. I come from a small village in Kwabre and I tell you, what we suffered, I was home last week, and the dumsor after the renaming of the Ameri Power Plant, the dumsor that we have experienced in the Ashanti region is unparalleled even during our time, there
