The Graduate Students' Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has announced its intention to join forces with the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference in a nationwide protest against illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, and what they describe as worsening governance in the country. The protest, scheduled for October 11, 2024, is expected to draw significant attention to the environmental degradation caused by galamsey and the perceived lapses in leadership in addressing the issue. The Catholic Bishops have been vocal in their criticisms of illegal mining, which has devastated large portions of Ghana’s forests, farmlands, and water bodies. Ghanaian reggae and dancehall musician Ras Kuuku shared his thoughts on the much-discussed 24-hour economy during a studio discussion on Onua TV.

With the 2024 elections drawing closer, the topic has gained traction as John Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), campaigns on the promise of implementing a 24-hour economy.

Ras Kuuku expressed his curiosity and interest in the concept, stating, "For digitalisation, we have already been experiencing it. Ghana is gradually being digitized. But we haven’t seen the 24-hour economy before." His remarks highlight the gradual shift towards a more digital society but also underline the novelty and potential impact of a 24-hour economy in Ghana.

He further added, "It is something I want to see, so I would like for him [Mahama] to come and implement it so I can witness it." Ras Kuuku's statement reflects a desire to see the practical application of this economic model in the country, which promises to extend business hours and economic activities around the clock.

Importantly, Ras Kuuku clarified his political stance, stating that he has not declared support for either John Mahama or Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). "I haven’t declared support for John Mahama or Bawumia either side. I simply want to witness the implementation of the 24-hour economy for myself," he emphasized.

As the campaign season intensifies, Ras Kuuku's comments add to the ongoing conversation about the feasibility and potential benefits of a 24-hour economy in Ghana.
