The Graduate Students' Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has announced its intention to join forces with the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference in a nationwide protest against illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, and what they describe as worsening governance in the country. The protest, scheduled for October 11, 2024, is expected to draw significant attention to the environmental degradation caused by galamsey and the perceived lapses in leadership in addressing the issue. The Catholic Bishops have been vocal in their criticisms of illegal mining, which has devastated large portions of Ghana’s forests, farmlands, and water bodies. They argue that despite various government initiatives to combat galamsey, the issue persists, posing a serious threat to the environment and livelihoods across the country. GRASAG, representing the voices of Ghana’s graduate students, has expressed concerns about the future of the nation, particularly in the areas of environmental cons

JUST IN: "STRAIGHT 8 NOT 4" - NDC WOMEN ORGANIZERS DECLARE THEIR SUPPORT FOR DR. DUFFOUR

Some Women Organizers of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have bought the presidential nomination forms for Dr Kwabena Dufdour to contest the NDC flagbearership race.

The Women Organizers, led by Gloria Huze, the Ashanti Regional Women’s Organizer stormed the NDC’s Headquarters in Adabraka to pick the forms, handing a cheque of GH₵‎30, 000 cedis to Lawyer is Kakra Essamoah, the Director of Election of the NDC, who later handed it over to the Accountant of the party.

According to Madam Gloria Huze, the Women Organizers are from the branch, constituency and regional levels of the party across the 16 regions of Ghana.

Madam Gloria Huze explained that the women organizer decided to contribute to buy the forms for Dr Duffour because they believe in his vision for Ghana,

She added that the current state of the Ghanaian economy required someone with a proven track record in economic management to lead the country to the path of recovery, growth and prosperity.

She also said, the Women Organisers consider Dr Kwabena Duffour as the right person with the competence to salvage Ghanaians from the current economic mess.

“We decide to contribute to buy the forms for Dr Kwabena Duffour not because he is broke, but only because we believe in his competence.

“When you look at the hardship imposed on Ghanaians due to the incompetence of the Akufo-Addo led administration, women are the ones suffering the most, this is why the women in the party and across the country are crying for a leader like Dr Kwabena Duffour.

“This is why the women decided to contribute their widow’s mite to buy the forms for Dr Duffour to contest and become the flagbearer of the NDC for election 2024”, she said.

Aside from the Women Organizers, Madam Gloria Huze was also accompanied by Antonio Edem Asinyo, the Spokesperson for the Dr Kwabena Duffour Campaign, to pick the forms.

On his part, Mr Asinyo thanked leadership of the NDC for opening up the electioneering process for all qualified members of the party to contest, adding that they have been welcoming so far.

“’We are very happy, we are going to have a very healthy and fair competition”, he added.

When asked if the Dr Duffour team is worried about the leading members of the party openly declaring their support for former President Mahama, Mr Asinyo said they are unfazed, adding that this year’s flagbearership race will not be business as usual.

“This election is about the branch executives in the constituencies. Like I said, it is not going to be business as usual. We are not going to have former appointees and beneficiaries impose a candidate. The grassroots will make a decision and that decision is going to be made from today

“MPs and regional executives are free to support whoever they want to support. There is no worry at all about some regional chairman endorsing a candidate, they however do not speak for every delegate of the party. We are not worried, it's a healthy competition. If we win we will come together to work with them”, he added
