Galamsey Menace: GRASAG to Join Catholic Bishops in Protest Against Galamsey on October 11

The Graduate Students' Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has announced its intention to join forces with the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference in a nationwide protest against illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, and what they describe as worsening governance in the country. The protest, scheduled for October 11, 2024, is expected to draw significant attention to the environmental degradation caused by galamsey and the perceived lapses in leadership in addressing the issue. The Catholic Bishops have been vocal in their criticisms of illegal mining, which has devastated large portions of Ghana’s forests, farmlands, and water bodies. They argue that despite various government initiatives to combat galamsey, the issue persists, posing a serious threat to the environment and livelihoods across the country. The W'Hambanathi hitmaker and philanthropist, Dr Mercy Hammond Sarfo popularly known in the Ghanaian Gospel Musician Fraternity as Obaasima Mercy just turned 50 years old on the 23rd of May, 2024. 

The philanthropist and musician is also the founder of Help One Another Foundation, a foundation that is dedicated to providing and catering for the less privileged, needy and widows in society.

She also doubles as the founder and leader of the You Need Me Association which is a group which is dedicated to seeking the interest and welfare of its members.

Popularly known as Obaasima Mercy, she has contributed to the Ghanaian Gospel Music Industry by composing and performing several life-changing gospel songs that have saved lots of souls.

She's known for songs like W'Hambanathi, Yenkye, and Nsa dame so, I have seen Jesus, Written, Me Nkwa Da Nyinaa among others. 

As young as 50 years, she's made lots of positive impacts on society by footing the bills of the less privileged, the sick and the widows through her foundation.

In a conversation with her, she indicates how happy and grateful she is to God for being so merciful to her and bringing her this far.

Recounting when growing up, she's been through the bitter sight of life, dropping out of school, selling on the street of Accra and also serving as a house help just to be able to make gains and be responsible.

Asking how she intends to celebrate this day, she gave the revelation of celebrating with the orphans and charities located in the United States of America where she is currently based.
