Galamsey Menace: GRASAG to Join Catholic Bishops in Protest Against Galamsey on October 11

Image
The Graduate Students' Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has announced its intention to join forces with the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference in a nationwide protest against illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, and what they describe as worsening governance in the country. The protest, scheduled for October 11, 2024, is expected to draw significant attention to the environmental degradation caused by galamsey and the perceived lapses in leadership in addressing the issue. The Catholic Bishops have been vocal in their criticisms of illegal mining, which has devastated large portions of Ghana’s forests, farmlands, and water bodies. They argue that despite various government initiatives to combat galamsey, the issue persists, posing a serious threat to the environment and livelihoods across the country. GRASAG, representing the voices of Ghana’s graduate students, has expressed concerns about the future of the nation, particularly in the areas of environmental cons...

The Influence Of John Mahama's Number 8 Position On The Coming Election

Image
In the political landscape of Ghana, the upcoming elections are influenced by two important factors: the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) "Breaking the 8" agenda and John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing the 8th position on the ballot paper. 1. The NPP's "Breaking the 8" Agenda: The NPP has been in power for two consecutive terms with President Nana Akufo-Addo (2016-2024). Their "Breaking the 8" agenda aims to win a third consecutive term, which has never been achieved in Ghana's Fourth Republic. Since 1992, power has alternated between the NDC and the NPP every eight years. By breaking this cycle, the NPP hopes to achieve a significant milestone and defy historical trends. However, the NPP faces challenges such as voter fatigue, economic concerns (inflation, unemployment), and issues related to governance and corruption. Despite these challenges, if the NPP can effectively communicate their vision for continuity and...

Election: (CSD-Ghana) Backs The NDC’s “Enough is Enough” Protest In Demand For A Credible Voters’Register

Image
The CSD-Ghana believes strongly that the foundation of any free and fair election is a credible register and as such, any effort towards having a credible Voters’ Register must be supported by all democracy lovers. The Electoral Commission has admitted to many errors in the Electoral Roll, as pointed out by the NDC, but has failed to allow for an independent forensic audit into the same. The EC, for example, has admitted that there were illegal vote transfers in Sagnerigu, Pusiga and Tamale South by an Electoral Commission Official in Tamale South. According to the EC, these illegal transfers went through because there was no “liveness check” mechanism in place to prevent such situations.  The NDC says the situation is widespread so there must be an audit. This is a fair and reasonable call to make, but the EC has remained intransigent. CSD-Ghana stands ready to fully participate in this protest and asks other democracy lovers to join us to mount enough pressure on the Electoral Co...

Image
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has confidently declared that the 2024 Voters’ Register is both robust and credible, urging citizens to disregard claims suggesting otherwise. In an X post on Wednesday, the Commission emphasised the integrity and reliability of the Voters’ Register, assuring the public that it is fully prepared for the upcoming 2024 Elections. This follows claims by the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the register has discrepancies that must be corrected ahead of the elections. NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama has also asked the EC to sit up and do its work properly. Speaking at a gathering in Adjen Kotoku within the Amasaman constituency as part of his Greater Accra regional campaign on Wednesday, Mahama emphasised the need for the EC to intervene immediately to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process. “A lot of people cannot find their names. Other people’s names have been transferred without their knowledge. Peopl...

Image
Ghanaian reggae and dancehall musician Ras Kuuku shared his thoughts on the much-discussed 24-hour economy during a studio discussion on Onua TV.  With the 2024 elections drawing closer, the topic has gained traction as John Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), campaigns on the promise of implementing a 24-hour economy. Ras Kuuku expressed his curiosity and interest in the concept, stating, "For digitalisation, we have already been experiencing it. Ghana is gradually being digitized. But we haven’t seen the 24-hour economy before." His remarks highlight the gradual shift towards a more digital society but also underline the novelty and potential impact of a 24-hour economy in Ghana. BEING A NEXT-OF-KIN DOES NOT QUALIFY YOU TO INHERIT AND ACCOUNT - BOG CLARIFIES

In Ghana, the concept of next of kin plays a significant role in banking and financial transactions. The next of kin is typically a trusted individual designated to inherit a person's assets, including bank accounts, in the event of their passing. However, Ghanaians' perception of bank next of kin is shaped by a complex mix of cultural, social, and economic factors, leading to varying degrees of trust and security concerns. In Ghanaian culture, family ties are paramount, and the next of kin is often seen as a responsible and trustworthy individual. This cultural significance is reflected in the way Ghanaians view bank next of kin, with many considering it a vital aspect of estate planning and asset protection. KASOA NEWS: Kasoa Market Engulfed By Fire

Image
Several shops at the Kasoa New Market have been lost in an early morning fire that destroyed several properties. Although that section of the market is not connected to the national grid, the entire space was engulfed in the fire. Citi News sources say human activities might have been the cause of the fire. Some market women who lost their belongings to the fire say they are devastated. “I was in the house when I had a call that my shop was on fire. The entire space was up in flames when I got to the scene. I have lost all my belongings in the fire and I wonder how I will get money to start a new business,” Akosua Agyeiwaa, a devastated market woman told Citi News. NDC MANIFESTO: $10 Billion Infrastructure Investment and Project Completion Plan - JM Vows

Image
John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has committed to launching an ambitious $10 billion infrastructure investment plan over five years if elected in the December 7 presidential elections. The plan aims to bolster key sectors of the country’s economy. Mahama also assured voters that his administration would prioritize the completion of ongoing projects rather than initiating new ones—a practice that has often led to the abandonment of significant infrastructure developments when governments Ghana has long grappled with the issue of uncompleted projects, with notable examples including the $3 billion STX housing deal and the Saglemi Housing Project, which remains a point of contention. During the NDC’s manifesto launch at the University of Education, Winneba, Mahama stated, “We will implement a $10 billion, 5-year infrastructure investment in critical sectors.” He further emphasized his commitment to finishing existing projects, saying, “ We wil...

Ghanaian Blogger Faces 30 Days Jail Term For Publishing False News

Image
Jeffrey Epprim Nyame, a well-known Ghanaian blogger, has been sentenced to a 30-day jail term by an Accra Circuit Court for the publication of false news that incited public panic.  The court, presided over by Mr. Isaac Addo, found Nyame guilty of spreading misinformation that led to panic withdrawals from bank accounts, causing disruption within financial institutions. Nyame, who has been on trial since last year, was charged with publishing a false report on his news portal, reportghana.net , in October 2022.  The article falsely claimed that dollar account holders would be forced to withdraw cedis at Bank of Ghana (BoG) rates, a statement that spread quickly across social media and various WhatsApp platforms, leading to widespread fear and panic. Despite appeals for leniency from both Nyame and his lawyer, John Baptist Ayitse, the judge maintained that a custodial sentence was necessary to deter others from using social media irresponsibly. "The unchecked publication of fal...
